MDC Watermain Life Study
Malcolm Pirnie and MDC Water Supply

A Field Test and Analysis Plan was developed and implemented to study soil and pipe conditions within the water distribution system. Next, the test and analysis plan was used to assist Malcolm Pirnie and the MDC (Hartford) in development of "Life Expectancy Curves" for the MDC's Water Distribution System.

Testing Services Provided

  • Soils samples - Soil Boring and Pit Samples
  • Soil Samples evaluated by 12 point Von Baeckmann and Schwenk system
  • Pipe samples - Exisiting Break samples and Core Plugs
  • Pipe samples examined and analyzed by visual and metallographic means
  • Issue Reports for each set of Soil and Pipe Analysis

Analysis and Recommendation Services Provided

  • MDC water distribution system break review and analysis
  • Determine number and locations of required Soil Boring samples
  • Categorize and analyze existing break samples - Lab Metallographic
  • Determine number and locations of new pipe (core) and soil samples
  • Perform on-site resistivity, Redox, and visual soil testing and observations
  • Obtain open pit soil and pipe plug samples for Lab analysis
  • Determination of Pipe Classes for Life Study - By Manufacturing technique, era of manufacture, Cast Iron or Ductile Iron, etc.
  • Provide a Life Expectancy Study

Summary and Results

Based on results of soil and pipe analysis performed a "Factor of Safety" analysis of all pipe samples obtained, extrapolated this to a remaining useful life estimate. This data was also classified by "Pipe Classes" previously identified and used to create or adjust "Life Expectancy Curves" for these Pipe Classes.
